Lanner’s next generation network security platforms deliver exceptional performance and flexible networking using Cavium OCTEON Plus and OCTEON II Processors
(Taipei, Taiwan – April 15 , 2009) Lanner Electronics, a leading ODM manufacturer of advanced network application platforms, today announced support for the OCTEON II Processors from Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, storage, wireless, video and security applications. Lanner also concurrently released a pair of network appliance platforms in 1U and 2U form factors based on the OCTEON Plus processor family.
As a Cavium PACE (Partnership to Accelerate Customer End-solutions) member, Lanner is fully committed to the OCTEON Plus and OCTEON II families of multi-core processors. Lanner’s collaboration with Cavium has enabled the development of an extensive range of OCTEON-based appliance platforms, and Lanner recently launched two new rackmount systems – the Lanner MR-955 and MR-956 – targeting network acceleration and security applications for enterprise-class markets.
The
MR-955 is a 1U appliance platform with 14 Gigabit Ethernet ports, 10 of which are SFP/copper combo ports, redundant power supplies, and configurable bypass ports with support for the OCTEON CN58xx and CN38xx series processors. The
MR-956 is a 2U rackmount appliance that supports an additional 14-port network module for a maximum of 28 copper and fiber network ports. The MR-955 provides one 2.5” hard drive bay, while the MR-956 provides two. A PCI-X expansion slot is available on the MR-956 only. Both the MR-955 and MR-956 include internal SATA II and CompactFlash storage, two USB ports and a DB9 RS-232 console port, and support up to 8GB of DDR2 memory. As with all Lanner network appliance platforms, the two systems are fully customizable to meet any customer’s branding requirements.
In addition, Lanner is currently developing a range of platforms built on the next generation OCTEON II processor to take advantage of the latest advances in multi-core processor technology. "At Lanner we're excited to be working with Cavium to develop products on the new OCTEON II processor for several reasons," said Jesse Chiang, Lanner Network Communications Product Planner. "First, performance improvements and future-proof features such as DDR3 and PCI-E Gen 2 support mean that OCTEON II based systems will last well into the future. Second, the high performance and scalability of Cavium’s chips gives us remarkable flexibility in designing our hardware architecture, and allows us to offer an extensive product line covering a wide range of performance and price points."
"OCTEON processors are being used by a number of leading hardware manufacturers like Lanner who develop appliance platforms for a range of network applications. As network traffic continues to increase in bandwidth and complexity, high performance hardware is needed to handle critical network tasks such as security, QoS, switching and routing, load balancing and WAN acceleration," said Tasha Castañeda, Senior Strategic Alliance Manager, Cavium Networks. "With the next generation OCTEON II processor family, companies like Lanner will be able to build extremely scalable platforms to meet these application demands and satisfy customer requirements for a seamless upgrade path and low power consumption."
The recently announced Cavium Networks OCTEON II Internet Application Processor (IAP) family is designed for the next generation of Hypernetworks serving enterprise, data center, access and service provider markets which require support for converged data, voice and video. The OCTEON II family integrates 1 to 32 MIPS64 cores, up to 75 Application Acceleration Engines for quality of service, packet processing, TCP, compression, encryption, RAID, de-duplication and regular expression processing, up to 400Gbps of DDR3 memory bandwidth, and up to 100Gbps of network connectivity while consuming only 2W to 60W across the entire family.
